University Ministry Urban Plunge, an Experience of Homelessness: Denver, CO

This 24 hour retreat is the perfect option for those who wish to participate in an alternative spring break trip but don’t necessarily have the time or money to commit to a full week. Spend the day interacting with individuals experiencing homelessness, and then in the evening, take some time for reflection and relationship building while we sleep in the basement of a church. An ‘Urban Plunge’ is a program designed to challenge students to view the world through a lens that is radically different than their own by examining what it’s like to live in the greater Denver area as a person who is homeless. Through thoughtful mentorship, students are challenged to interact with their community in new ways. By developing personal relationships with individuals who are currently homeless and those who work with the homeless population on a regular basis students can begin to see these common places in their city from a new perspective.

Trip Dates

  • Saturday March 2, 2013 to Sunday March 3, 2013

Trip Highlights

  • Take time to meet with some of the homeless population and deconstruct some of your preconceived notions about homelessness
  • A unique opportunity to experience your city from a new perspective
  • After a long day challenging yourself to leave your comfort zone, enjoy yourself with evening activities

What to Expect

  • Lodging in a church
  • A great way to bond with your peers in a community setting
  • Meeting new people
