Research Training Resources

The Office of Academic Grants provides Regis faculty and students with the training they need to acquire funding and conduct their research in an ethical manner. Please contact OAG for help with finding or completing research training.

Required CITI Certification

Regis University requires Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) research training for faculty and students participating in research activities.

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) at Regis University recognizes the value of the multiple methodological approaches taught and employed at Regis University. Central to all these methods is the rights and protection of human subjects who participate in our research and learning. Based on federal guidelines and, moreover, the basic grounding principle of Regis University "How ought we to live?" the IRB Committee at Regis University makes the following policy recommendations.

  • All Regis University faculty teaching research method classes, capstone classes and allied coursework that involves data gathering from primary sources be CITI certified.*
  • All students at Regis University participating in research method classes, capstone classes and allied coursework that involves data gathering from primary sources be CITI certified, if the IRB deems the research is expedited or requiring full board review.*
  • All faculty and students at Regis University engaging in primary independent research that involves human subject participation be CITI certified.*
  • All Regis University faculty who wish to obtain an authorized proxy (formerly omnibus approval qualification) and thus serve as a proxy for a specific course at Regis University must be CITI certified.* Proxies or a college/school/department designee will retain all required paper work for human subject approval and will be under the oversight of the IRB.

Rationale for these recommendations

  • Federal guidelines; federal grant requirements to affirm University compliance
  • Uphold the academic integrity of the University
  • Application of the Regis "nine'
  • Promote and foster a culture of quality research at Regis
  • Increase the speed and efficiency of the research review process at Regis
  • Oversight of all research done at Regis
  • Assessment of the amount of research done at Regis

What is CITI?

Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) is an IRB certification hosted by the University of Miami. Currently it is serving over 1600 higher learning institutions and organizations worldwide.

What CITI modules are required?

The required modules are found under the CITI Social Behavioral Research (SBR) Investigators and Key Personnel Group/Stage 1 Basic courses. IRB will assist faculty and students in locating this online training. Once completed, the faculty or student will print copies of the certificates for their records and an IRB file. The following CITI modules will be required.

  • Introduction (no quiz)
  • History and Ethical Principles - SBR
  • The Regulations and the Social and Behavioral Sciences - SBR
  • Assessing Risk in Social and Behavioral Sciences - SBR
  • Informed Consent - SBR
  • Privacy and confidentiality - SBR

These modules are necessary but not necessarily sufficient. Training other than the Social Behavioral Research modules may be required (e.g., Biomedical module

Other Social Behavioral Research modules may be required depending on the type of research being conducted. For example (but not limited to), a person working with children would be required to complete the Research with Children module; a person working with the prison population would be required to complete the Research with Prisoners module; as person working in the public school system would be required to complete the Research in Public Elementary and Secondary Schools module; a person doing international research would be required to complete the International Research module.

* All references to CITI certification are intended to mean current CITI certification.

Please contact OAG for help with CITI registration, or follow these directions from the CITI website.
