Our Goal and Commitments

Tutoring Services' main goal is to foster sustainable growth in student-learning. We guide students in navigating coursework smartly by providing strategies and resources to promote development of short and long term study goals. Subject tutors are trained to collaboratively work one-to-one, or in groups, with students in a host of areas, including and not limited to, topic comprehension, definition, illustration, preparation, computation, analysis, practicing, quizzing, and reviewing. Subject tutors are available to students whose courses match our offerings, and we constantly strive to add support across disciplines and degrees.

At Tutoring Services, we understand that students and faculty have expectations for end results. While subject tutors help navigate, they know it is challenging to learn it all in one session and desire that students allow them time to work toward their educational goals.

What to Expect from Sessions

Subject Tutors

  • ask that students prep for sessions: attempt assigned texts/problems beforehand, have specific questions, possess awareness of in-class instruction, and bring necessary academic tools.
  • ask students about their assignment and what they want to focus on.
  • collaborate on the session's agenda and navigate study material together with students.
  • help guide students toward answers, but do not have all the answers.
  • do not complete/fix the work for students.
  • do not discuss/guarantee grades.
  • encourage students to be active participants in the learning process by applying study skills independently to future work.

To work with a subject tutor, please make an appointment through our scheduler.

Tutoring Services Mythbusters

MYTH: Tutors have/will give me all the answers.

FACT: Tutors do not have all the answers. While they can help with basics and more, it is at times challenging for them to answer specific questions without preparation. Use the "What would you like to work on today?" section on the appointment form to better equip your tutor for your session. Similarly, tutors do not have ready-made answers to quizzes, tests, and exams.

MYTH: Tutors will do/fix my work for me.

FACT: Tutors cannot do/fix your homework for you; however, depending on the subject and your level of attention and participation, they will help you with a host of study areas including topic comprehension, definition, illustration, preparation, computation, analysis, practicing, quizzing, reviewing, study tips, etc.

MYTH: Tutors will have/know what I need for my session.

FACT: Tutors cannot know what you need and greatly appreciate students who prep for sessions beforehand, have specific questions about assigned texts/problems, have awareness of in-class instruction, and bring necessary tools (books, notes, formulas, calculators, assignments, rubrics, etc.).

Also, remember that it is difficult to learn everything in one session. Give yourself and your tutor time to make your tutoring sessions productive.
