In January of this year, the Southern Education Foundation released a report stating that, for the first time in 50 years, 51 percent of American school children in Pre-K through 12th grade between 2012 and 2013 qualified for federal food assistance programs. In other words, more than half of American students were living below the poverty line. This presents a whole host of well-known challenges in the classroom.
