Regis University Porter-Billups Programs Fund

Lonnie Porter, longtime men’s head basketball coach at Regis University, has been applying his proven model of academic and leadership development since 1996 to help at-risk youth. In 2006, the program was renamed the Porter-Billups Leadership Academy when Denver native and NBA player Chauncey Billups joined Porter. Billups plays a more active role each year. The Academy helps at-risk and low-income Denver youth graduate from high school and college. Regis University funds about half of the Academy’s annual budget and the remainder comes from donors.

The Academy serves over 100 students each year through two major program components:

  • A 3-week summer program that delivers academic and leadership content to 4th through 12th graders
  • Year-round support of the high school students in the program

The selection process includes an invitation to teachers at low-income Denver elementary schools to nominate students with academic potential, strong attendance, positive behavior, leadership qualities and parental involvement. The Academy provides transportation, meals and is free to students. Three-quarters of the participants may become the first in their families to graduate from college.
