Real People. Lasting Impact. Angelica Pereda, RC ’17 Angelica M. Pereda, RC ’17, a veteran of the United States Navy, has always been ambitious. She sets goals and surpasses them. But attending Regis University as a first-generation college student and becoming a nurse seemed out of reach. Soon after being accepted into the nursing program, a scholarship from the Louise Patricia Esquivel Maestas and Gilbert Boniface Maestas, M.D., RC ’48, Endowed Financial Aid Fund made her Regis dream a reality. “Being a Regis nursing student was something I had only imagined. When I discovered they provided additional services for veterans I became determined to graduate from Regis,” she said. Pereda chose Regis above other universities because of the unique support given to members of the armed forces but also because of the sterling reputation of the nursing program. She wanted to become a leader as a nurse, and Regis gave her the tools and motivation to do it. As a member of the Regis Student Nurses Association and Mentor Program, Pereda learned to lead with the Jesuit values as her guide. “My Regis education taught me to care for myself so I can properly care for others,” she said. “The definition of health is taken to another level with the focus on cura personalis, or care for the whole person.” After graduating, Pereda is prepared to set grand goals as a nurse and achieve them by living the Regis mission for the benefit of others.
