Regis, Creighton universities partner to offer exclusive online occupational therapy degree program

January 16, 2015

Regis University and Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., have embarked on a historic partnership between two Jesuit universities to create a joint occupational therapy doctoral degree program, addressing the nation’s growing need for occupational therapists.

The Regis Creighton Occupational Therapy Collaboration represents the only online doctorate of occupational therapy in Colorado, and is the first partnership of its kind among Jesuit universities. Regis students will take classes online, taught by Creighton faculty. Laboratory sessions will run on the Regis campus. At the successful conclusion of the program, students will earn a Creighton University diploma.

Susan Scherer, associate dean of the Rueckert-Hartman College for Health Professions at Regis, said she’s excited to offer this unique online program to Colorado-based students and to add occupational therapy to the educational options at Regis.

“There is a real and growing need for occupational therapists, and this program will help create some of the best practitioners in the country, right here in Colorado,” she said. “Both Regis and Creighton have a firm commitment to academic excellence, so combining our respective strengths will greatly benefit our students and the patients we serve.”

J. Chris Bradberry, dean of the Creighton School of Pharmacy and Health Professions, agreed. “We are immensely pleased to set out on this new partnership,” he said. “To be able to train a new generation of practitioners to serve Colorado in the occupational therapy discipline is a great trust Creighton and Regis have willingly and solemnly accepted.”

Creighton was the first university in the nation to offer a doctor of occupational therapy degree. Growth in the field is projected to accelerate; the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts more than 30,000 new occupational therapist jobs will be created by 2022.  Applications are being accepted now for the Regis Creighton Occupational Therapy Collaboration.
