School of Physical Therapy ‘Couch to 5K’ prepares attendees for fall race

April 27, 2017

Regis University’s School of Physical Therapy has a message for neighborhood residents: Join its new “Couch to 5K” weekly program, which begins in June, and receive a discount to run in the University’s popular Move Forward 5K/10K this fall.

While this year marks the 15th running of the Move Forward races, the free Couch to 5K program is new and includes a team T-shirt. Participants will meet at 6 p.m. every Wednesday, beginning June 14, at the Rocky Mountain Lake Park in Denver’s Berkeley neighborhood. Specific park locations will be provided on the website each week, or learn more by contacting the program’s organizers at moveforward5k.10k@gmail.com or (303) 458-3548.

The Move Forward 5K and 10K are scheduled for 9 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Regis University Northwest Denver Campus, 3333 Regis Blvd. More than 250 community members participated in last year’s races.

This year, the School of Physical Therapy seeks to lower the barrier to entry by helping train Denver residents for the fall race. In the beginning, participants will rotate between running and walking to build endurance. All ages are welcome; children may participate with a waiver signed by a parent or guardian.

“It’s designed for somebody who hasn’t been active,” said Claire Molenaar, who is in her second year of study in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Regis. “We hope we can help people empower themselves to be active, and we really like the idea of bringing community together. Having a strong community matters.”

Those who enroll in and attend the Couch to 5K program will receive at least $10 off their registration for the Move Forward 5K or 10K race. Without the discount, the 5K is $25 and the 10K is $30. Included in each race registration is a T-shirt and post-race food and games.

“Creating a healthier community in a fun way is our goal,” said Ryan Bourdo, a second-year student in Regis’ Doctor of Physical Therapy program. “We’d like to get as many people in the community involved as possible.”

Race organizers plan to donate race earnings to Canine Companions for Independence, which since 1975 has provided assistance dogs free of charge to recipients. Regis physical therapy students and faculty members train and care for many of these therapy dogs until they are placed. Organizers also plan to donate to the national Foundation for Physical Therapy, which funds research and scholarships.

These and other fitness programs are sponsored in part by Cultivate Health, which partners with residents and nonprofits to promote health in Northwest Denver.
