Online MBA program positions Kenyan nun to be in the business of helping others

Challenges have never shaken Sister Leonida Kwamboka. While a principal at a Kenyan, Catholic women’s college among an all-male faculty, she sought an education that would enable her to directly benefit families in Kibera, the largest urban slum in Africa. She saw Regis University’s online MBA program as a way to do it. Sister Leonida shared with Regis.edu why she chose Regis and where it has taken her.

What made you decide on Regis, and a Jesuit education?
Jesuit education is distinctive compared to other kinds of education. It emphasizes values, and I longed for that sort of education for my own personal development and the responsibilities of my job. The Regis online program was also very convenient for me because I could work and study. Regis’ program was reputed as being the best online program.

How would you describe your Regis experience?
It opened my eyes, ears and heart. I interacted with students from various countries, which enriched my cultural experience. All the latest research, books and journals gave me a great feeling of being up to date with the happenings in the business world. It gave me new perspectives and the courage to move out of my comfort zone and into running the business of helping others.

How are you using the skills you learned in the MBA program?
I am in the business of helping the vulnerable by helping children access education and their mothers learn skills to earn a living. As the director of Wanawake kwa Wanawake, a charitable organization based in Nairobi, I face many challenges. With a staff of five, we have 400 kids in our care who are in different schools, colleges and universities. These children would never have attended school had we not come to their aid. We also support orphans, sick parents and children by providing food, housing and medical support.
