When Jennifer got the opportunity of a lifetime, she chose Regis to help reach her dreams
Jennifer Navarro will never forget that day. She’d been checking the mail for weeks, praying the letter would come. On that afternoon she shuffled through the bills and catalogs to find one thick envelope. The name at the top set her heart fluttering – Gates Millennium Scholarship.
She opened it, read the first line and started screaming.
It would have been a special moment for any young person preparing for college. A scholarship covering the full cost of undergraduate, graduate and doctoral studies does not come around too often. But for Jennifer, the first in her family to graduate high school, it meant even more because she knew it would change the course of her life and the history of her family.
When she broke the news to her parents, her mother started crying. Her father gave her a pep talk about the opportunity awaiting her. Jennifer felt profound joy knowing her hard work in high school had paid off.
Her next step was choosing a college. With the opportunity to study anywhere in the nation, she chose the place she felt would best support her dream of becoming a doctor.
“My heart told me Regis,” she said. “It just felt right.”
She knew the University and its Jesuit tradition from her time at Arrupe Jesuit High School, a partner institution not far from Regis’ Northwest Denver campus. At Arrupe Jesuit, she learned the value of caring professors, education through experience and service to others.
She knew she would benefit from the same at Regis.
“I want to work with professors who care about my success,” she said. “And I want to give back to my city and the community that has given me so much.”
