Program Background, Goals & Results
In the Spring of 2003, Regis offered its first English as a Second Language program plan for the B&G Service Solutions staff. Since then, the program has seen a variety of structural changes, however the goal remains the same: to teach English to the custodial staff members working at the Regis campus, and to create a genuine sense of community between the custodial staff and Regis faculty, students, and staff.
The results so far have been positive for custodial employees and Regis faculty, students, and staff alike. ESL students have improved their English language skills and feel more a part of the Regis community through forming friendships with their tutors. Students, faculty, and staff better understand the custodians who donate so much of their time and talents to make Regis a better place to live, learn, and work.
Process, Training & Support
Custodians are paired one-on-one with Regis students, staff, and faculty at a time of their choosing. This allows Regis and custodians to create relationships and to focus learning. ESL students are of all different levels and have varied backgrounds. All tutoring sessions take place on the Regis Lowell Campus, usually in the Dayton Memorial Library.
Volunteers must be able to commit from 1-3 hours per week and need to make a three month commitment to working with a custodian. Tutors are trained and supported both in pedagogy and with pertinent materials. Recently, the University has purchased a variety of hands-on resources to enhance learning, available to all tutoring pairs. Both the tutors and the learners who participate in the program have great opportunities to grow and learn.
