Jefferson’s contributions to America live in the Declaration of Independence, his creation of the University of Virginia and his years as president of the United States, which for Jefferson was his least satisfying contribution. Not unlike the conduct of many founding fathers, Jefferson was an enigma. While he wrote the Declaration of Independence and the words "that all men are created equal" — which are his alone — he kept slaves during his life, as did George Washington and Andrew Jackson, to name a few.

Reading Meacham’s Thomas Jefferson will convince you to read other books by him.
