Skinner Middle School

Goals:

To be a supportive presence to the students and staff at Skinner Middle School
To foster and instill confidence and self respect in each student
To help develop students’ individual skills and talents
To present the opportunities available to students after middle school
To be a future link to higher education

Method of Educational Support: Classroom Volunteers and Mentor-Leaders

What do the Volunteers do?

Regis volunteers have an opportunity to work in a variety of classes in teaching-mentoring roles. Regis students work in Social Studies, Adaptive Functioning (education for the less socially adapted, mildly disabled middle school students), Math, Remedial math, Reading/Language Arts, Writing, Art and PE classes with dedicated, enthusiastic staff. Depending on the class, volunteer roles include leading small reading/discussion groups, assistant teaching in-class assignments, grading, and working one-on-one with students. Classroom volunteer positions are for a full semester.

Hours: Regis students arrange the hours and days to work in classes from 7:30am-2:30pm Monday-Friday.

Ready to Volunteer?

Fill out a the Regis Application Form, the Denver Public Schools Volunteer Application form and Background Check. Make sure you specify the times and days you are available to serve when filling out the application . Once you complete these documents, drop them off in the Skinner/Wendy Paddock mail box in the reception area of Main Hall 214. Wendy will submit this to Skinner and will contact you once you have been cleared to begin serving. Do note that this process could take up to two weeks.
Upon receiving the confirmation email, go to Skinner at the specified time to meet the teacher.
Attend one of the orientation meetings (date, time, location TBA)
Check out the DPS Calendar so that you're familiar with the DPS schedule
Make sure you are able to commit to a class or after school program for at least one semester during the arranged hours and days.
Must possess a desire to reach out in a positively energizing atmosphere and be open to personal growth
Ability/willingness to communicate compassionately with teachers and middle school students

*Please note* Regis volunteers are not obligated to volunteer on Regis days off. The Calendar will show the days that Skinner does not have school.

Directions from Regis: From 50th and Lowell, go south on Lowell to 41st. Make a left on 41st until King (one block east). The school will be on the corner.
