Academia Sandoval is a Dual Language Montessori School and aims to have all of their students become bilingual/biliterate by the end of sixth grade. Preschool classrooms (3, 4, and 5 year olds) are two-language environments and lower elementary classrooms (1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades) are single-language environments, where two classrooms team together to meet the needs of two language groups – one environment is English and one environment is Spanish.
Volunteers (parents, community, university students/interns) at Academia Sandoval are an integral part of the work we do with children and families. Volunteers work with students in Kindergarten through 5th grade classrooms with reading and writing skills. An assistant to the coordinator in preparing materials for the classroom is also needed. While all volunteers are welcome, a specific need for bilingual individuals and native Spanish speakers exists. The Annunciation School Tutoring Project provides a "working with kids" service opportunity that seeks individuals to provide tutoring and mentoring to students at one of Denver's oldest schools. Many of these students face economic and family issues that compete with academic demands. These students benefit from the consistent attention and example that dedicated college students provide. Tutors are needed in both elementary classrooms and in middle school study sessions. Because Fr. Woody spent the first fourteen years of his priesthood at this school, it is a special project. The project runs on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3 pm - 5 pm. Weekly participation is absolutely required, as children depend on "their" Regis student showing up each Monday or Wednesday for them. The Colorado Anti-Violence Program (CAVP) is looking for new volunteers to become a valuable part of the organization. There are many ways you can get involved, including completing administrative tasks, community outreach, building referral databases, and staffing the 24-hour crisis hotline.
We are especially looking for more volunteers to be trained to be hotline advocates.
If you are interested in either of these trainings, please RSVP to 303-839-5204 or kelly@coavp.org ASAP.
The general orientation will provide you with all of the tools you'll need to be an amazing volunteer with CAVP. This is also a great way to see if the CAVP crisis hotline is right for you. The next general orientation will take place on October 3 from 8:30am-5pm.
Because the crisis hotline training is about 30 hours long, you will be making a considerable time-commitment to both the training and the hotline itself. Hotline shifts are a half week long, where you will carry a pager for 24-hours a day. When people call the hotline, they will leave a message and the pager will then go off. You must have access to returning that phone call within 20 minutes of the call. If you have any questions about how the hotline can fit into your schedule, please let us know.
The next crisis hotline training will take place:
• Saturday, October 3, 8:30am-5pm
• Thursday, October 8, 6-9pm
• Saturday, October 10, 8:30am-5pm
• Sunday, October 11, 8:30am-5pm
