Biology

Physiology Position Search, Finalist Information

We educate students to be scientists engaged in the world.

Our Mission is to offer an exceptional learning experience in the Jesuit Tradition of academic rigor and value-centered education, in which students acquire the skills, knowledge and broader understanding necessary to prepare them for a variety of careers and for fulfilling lives as leaders in the service of others. To do this we endeavor to teach students the nature of scientific inquiry, the fundamentals of modern biology (from molecules to ecosystems), and how to put that knowledge into the larger context of the students' lives. The recognition that inquiry is at the heart of science means that we not only strive to teach students biology but we strive to teach students how to be responsible biologists.

The Biology curriculum extends beyond the classroom.

Research and internships provide valuable opportunities. We believe that teaching, research, and the professional environment are interconnected. Students develop their own independent research projects in courses and are encouraged to participate in research with faculty members or internships outside of Regis. Interaction between students and faculty members outside the classroom are frequent and encouraged. The Denver metropolitan area offers numerous sites for research and internship experience, where they use the skills and experience gained in courses and through research with faculty at Regis.

For more information concerning internship opportunities in Regis College please see the Internship Program Office pages.

The Biology Department offers a variety of programs and courses.

The Biology Department offers three majors, two Emphases, and a minor. Students can complete the following degrees as either a B.S. or a B.A.

  • Biology
  • Biology, Molecular Biology and Genetics
  • Biology, Ecology and Evolution
  • Honors-in-Biology (B.S. only)
  • Honors-in-Biology, Molecular Biology and Genetics (B.S. only)
  • Honors-in-Biology, Ecology and Evolution (B.S. only)

Biology, the study of life, encompasses a broad spectrum of fascinating fields such as Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Developmental Biology, Physiology, Anatomy, Immunology, Ecology, Evolution, and Systematic Biology. In recognition of this diversity within Biology, students may choose specialize their Biology degrees by completing optional emphases in either Molecular Biology and Genetics or Ecology and Evolution. These fields only represent a portion of the courses offered in Biology. For a complete list of courses, view the Biology Course Descriptions.

Special features of the Biology Department are:

  • Extensive contact between students and faculty, including participation of students with faculty on diverse research projects.
  • A curriculum and departmental culture that emphasizes active participation in biology as a science.
  • Opportunities for undergraduate students to serve as laboratory teaching assistants, laboratory preparators and research assistants.
  • Laboratories are well-equipped with state-of-the-art biology equipment for a diversity of courses and student research projects.
  • Relationships with institutions in the Denver metropolitan area for research or internship opportunities.
  • Departmental student study/social space.
  • Two full-tuition scholarships available for in-coming first year students to major in Biology, awarded based in part on competitive examinations given in February (inquire through the Admissions Office).

Building Remodel and Equipment Upgrades

As a result of the substantial donation by the Pomponio Family and other donors the Science Building was remodeled in 2008 and renamed the Felix Pomponio Family Science Center, providing an up-to-date learning and research environment. The faculty were closely involved in the design of the laboratories to ensure that the remodeled laboratories best meet the needs of both 21st-century science and a challenging undergraduate biology curriculum. The remodel also involved a significant upgrade in the Biology Department equipment for teaching allowing the purchase of new student-use Leica microscopes, student-use molecular biology equipment, a research-grade fluorescent microscope, growth chambers, and other equipment. The establishment of an endowment in 2007 to fund equipment upgrades also means that we will be able to continue to maintain the most current equipment for student use in our laboratory courses.
