Computer Science

Welcome to one of the most diverse and exciting majors on campus. If you are looking for a degree that explores amazing science, uses the latest technologies, and has a direct impact on society, then you are in the right place. Where else can you get such an amazing blend of fundamental science, technology, engineering, and social application?

Our Mission

We educate the next generation of scientific and technology leaders within a moral, ethical and intellectually stimulating environment. We prepare graduates not just for the technological challenges of the workplace but also for the exciting science that will drive the next generation of solutions. Our focus on both science and technology creates critical-thinking, well-rounded individuals that can participate and positively influence both the social and engineering challenges of our times.

Why major in Computer Science?

Cool Science

A reversible cellular automaton The fundamental science just doesn't get any better. Did you know that a random sequence of 0's and 1's contains all possible knowledge? Yup, we'll prove it in class. Follow that sequence far enough and you'll find your high school essay on Romeo and Juliet complete with typos. There will also be a video of your first prom dance even if there was no camera present(!), immediately followed by a particularly yummy recipe for chocolate chip cookies. Cool, huh. Philosophically scary, but cool.

And did you know that the human mind can solve only a certain set of problems using rational thought? Proves that we have to be irrational to get some things done. (Whoa.) In an ironic twist of logic, we'll also show that some problems have a solution but that it's impossible to show that the solution is correct. (Ouch. That's a mouthful.)

Think you know what a computer is made of? Using cellular automaton pictures like the one above, we'll demonstrate that we can build fully functional computers from all kinds of parts -- DNA, colliding billiard balls, and even ski moguls!

Super-computing, neural-net brains, artificial life, cryptography, information theory, and mathematical proofs describing the limits of knowledge... That just barely scratches the surface. Heck, cosmological theories describing the nature of the universe are really just theories on computation and information processing. In other words, we're talking about the college major that really does address theories on life, the universe, and everything. It doesn't get any better than that.

Amazing Technology

Is there any other major where you'll get to design and build robots? I mean, really, how awesome is that? You'll learn about RISC chip architecture and other hardware. You'll learn to properly send error-free data on cell phones, the internet, wireless devices, and any bizarre telecom device that you invent. You'll learn to program and write applications, video games, and anything else you can dream up. Along the way, you'll find out how databases work, how to squash nasty viruses, how to network computers, and write your own operating systems so you can stick it to that stupid, no-good, system that came pre-loaded on your computer. Oh, and yeah. You're gonna' learn allll about computers. When your friends see the "blue screen of death", you're going to be the one that everyone begs for help.

Cool Faculty and Students

We're a diverse and fun group. Check us out. We've currently got a roller hockey addict (Ms. Litz), an extreme skier (more info at Dr. Bahr's home page), and an avid horseback rider (check out Dr. Steele's summer horse ranch). We have students and faculty that volunteer in Africa, Central America, and the Philippines. In recent years, our students have been the Regis Chief Justice (an elected student position) and the student director of campus activities. We've got double majors in music, business, math, and literature. We have students that are published authors, e-bay retailers, poker maniacs, and golf wizards. And we've got way more than our fair share of performance geniuses (plays, musicals, jazz bands, rock bands). And we have very, very smart students.

As Computer Science faculty, we really like what we do. We love teaching, we love mentoring, and we love being surrounded by dynamic students that have fascinating hobbies and cool ideas.
