- Why should I do an internship?
Students primarily intern to gain experience in their chosen field. Through the real world experience
students may confirm or realize their desire to continue in their current field of study, or to change
career direction..
- How do I find an internship?
There are several methods available to students to secure an internship. A brief list includes the
resources available in the Academic Internship Program’s office, On-line databases, Web-sites, and
through networking in the family, friends, and alumni.
- Do I have to be a Senior to do an internship?
Internships are available to Juniors and Seniors. Sophomores may take Field Experience for elective
credit.
- Where can I find an internship?
Internships are available at many organizations, businesses, and non-profit agencies. It is dependent
upon the student’s field of interest.
- Do I have to do the internship for credit?
No, a student is not required to do an internship for credit. However, some majors require an
internship and some businesses require a "for credit" internship for legal and policy regulations.
- If I already have a job, can I use it for my internship for credit?
Sometimes, it is dependent upon the job description and the learning objectives set forth by the
faculty sponsor and student. If the description meets the objectives of the course curricula, final
approval is at the discretion of the faculty sponsor.
- If I worked during the summer, can I get internship credit for in the Fall?
No. Internship credit must be obtained during the same semester as the placement
occurs. Retroactive credit is not given.
- Can I do an internship in the summer in a foreign country?
A student may study in a foreign country through the Office of Summer Sessions. This is usually the
preferred route to ensure that the transfer of credit occurs.
- Do I have to apply the credits toward my major?
No, if the student does not need the credits in their major in order to complete their degree, the
student may choose to transcript the credits as elective credit.
- Does the Academic Internship Program issue my final grade?
No. All grades are submitted by your faculty sponsor.
