Volunteer to be on a career panel or provide a job shadowing experience

Career Services hosts career panels throughout the academic year to educate students about a variety of potential career options. Students enjoy hearing about panelists' professional experiences. Job shadowing is a great way for students to learn about you occupation or industry. If you would like to participate as a panelist or provide a job shadowing opportunity, please contact Karen Metzger Adducci at 303-458-3509.

Parent's Quick Tips

  • Students Need to Make Their Own Choices: Career path decisions are very important and not always easy for students to make. While your student needs your help and support with career decisions, ultimately she or he must make the final decisions about majors and career choices.

You may have a family tradition in a particular career field. Or you may be tempted to have your student major in a particular area because it leads to jobs in a momentarily "hot" field. The reality is that there is no such thing as a major that guarantees a job. Your student must develop his/her own career path based on individual interests, personality, skills, and values. Encourage your student to pursue a subject that that he or she can feel enthusiastic about; success will follow. Regardless of the major, there are job opportunities for those who plan for them. Refer to our 4-year career planning guide for Linking Majors to Careers.

  • Encourage Career Exploration: Encourage your student to try different courses that may be of interest. Through this exploration, he/she may discover areas previously unknown.

  • Support Involvement in Extra-Curricular Activities: Clubs, sports, and volunteer activities provide opportunities to develop leadership, teamwork, time management, and communication skills to help your student prepare for the world of work. These "soft" skills are highly sought after by employers.

  • Be Patient: Resist the temptation to ask, "What are you going to do when you graduate?” This question causes panic for the student who is too busy preparing for the next test or term paper to even think about life after graduation. Instead, encourage your student to research some options early in the academic program. Be relaxed and supportive if she or he seems frustrated. Career Services provides counseling and assessment to help your student focus on potential careers to investigate.

  • Recommend Visits to Career Services. Career counselors work with students in every major at Regis. We can also help students make decisions about majors. We also provide career counseling and job search assistance, both before and after they graduate.

  • Suggest your student talk to his/her advisor about enrolling in Career Options and Your Future (PC220)
This two-credit course is designed for students who have not yet declared a major, are considering a change of major, or who want to make or confirm their career decisions. During the semester students will be acquainted with different aspects of the career planning process starting with choosing a major and they will become aware of their own interests, skills, values and personality types in relationship to making a decision about a major and a career direction.

  • Suggest exploring an internship for credit: The Academic Internship Program works with Regis College students and faculty advisors to find unpaid internships for Junior and Seniors that include credit toward graduation as well as valuable experience. Contact Joy Detra or Lynne Montrose for details.
