Grants

Scholarships and grants do not have to be repaid. They may be federal, state, or institutional funds. Full-time enrollment is required for all of grants and scholarships except the Federal Pell Grant, which is pro-rated for less than full-time enrollment.

Grants are usually awarded to students with financial need (based on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or some other criteria. Grants come in two categories:

  • Federal and State
  • Private (from Regis or from foundations, associations, individuals)

College Opportunity Fund
This program provides an amount of money per credit hour paid by the State of Colorado on behalf of eligible undergraduate resident students. The dollar amount of the stipend is set annually by the Colorado General Assembly; the per credit hour amount will be fifty percent (50%) of the amount set by theGeneral Assembly for public institutions. The number of stipend credit hours is capped at 145 credit hours, with an additional 30 hours of undergraduate credits available. For Regis University undergraduate students the stipend will be awarded through the financial aid process.

An eligible undergraduate student at Regis University is a student who:

  • has applied for the stipend through the College Assist website
  • is a documented Colorado resident
  • is a graduate of a Colorado high school or has successfully completed a non-public home-based education program in Colorado or received a GED in Colorado
  • demonstrates financial need through the student’s eligibility for the Federal Pell Grant program (student must complete the FAFSA)
  • has authorized Regis to receive COF funding on his or her behalf
  • meets any other eligibility requirements established by the Colorado Commission on Higher Education (CCHE).

College Assist administers the COF program, and students need to apply at College Assist only once in their lifetime.

In order to document Colorado residency, students must complete a current Colorado Residency form. The Authorization to Request COF Stipends form is used to authorize Regis University to apply the student's COF stipends to his or her Regis student account, or to rescind authorization. This form needs to be completed only once while the student is attending Regis University.

Certain courses are not eligible for the COF stipend, such as high school fast track courses, basic skills courses, and graduate courses unless taken for an undergraduate degree. For a more comprehensive listing, see the Q & A page.

Federal Pell Grant
This is a federally funded program for students with extreme financial need. Application is made by using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Federal legislation limits Federal Pell Grant funds to students who have not earned a bachelor's degree. The student's Expected Family Contribution, estimated costs, and enrollment status determine the amount of the Federal Pell grant.

Federal TEACH Grant
The College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007 created the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program, which provides up to $4,000 per year ($16,000 total for 4-year programs) in grants to students who commit to 1) teach full-time, 2) in high-need subject areas, 3) for at least four years, 4) at schools that serve students from low-income families. Graduate students may be eligible for $4,000 per year ($8,000 total) with this same commitment to teach.
