FERPA

Overview

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) guarantees students certain rights:

  • to inspect and review their education records;
  • to amend their education record;
  • to have some control over disclosure of information from their educational record.

Student Rights Under FERPA

The Act provides students with the right to inspect and review information contained in their education records, to challenge the contents of those records which students consider to be inaccurate, misleading, or otherwise in violation of their privacy or other rights, to have a hearing if the outcome of the challenge is unsatisfactory, and to submit explanatory statements for inclusion in their records if the decision of a hearing officer or panel is unacceptable.
