Full Time Requirements

F-1 students at Regis University must be full time two out of three semesters every year. Full time requirements are as follows:
Undergraduate Students = at least 12 credit hours.
Graduate Students = at least 6 credit hours.
Only one online course may be taken each semester to count towards full-time enrollment.

An international student’s failure to be full time will be reported to the USCIS resulting in falling out of status.

Note: Regis University’s College for Professional Studies offers a full schedule of courses year around. Therefore, there is no recognized summer vacation. Depending on your start date with Regis University, you may have to attend summer semesters. Contact the International Student Advisor if you have any questions.

OPT

Optional Practical Training - This is an employment opportunity for an F-1 student at the point of graduation. A student can partake in one year of authorized employment after receiving his or her degree at Regis. One must apply for OPT no more than 90 days prior to the completion of courses, but less than 60 days after graduation. Contact the International Student Advisor for more details.

The OPT 17-month extension is only available to those who earned a STEM degree (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). To be in-status during a student's OPT period, the student cannot be unemployed for more than an aggregate of 90 days during their 12-month OPT period and 120 days aggregate during their 17-month extension.

Travel Abroad

Make an appointment with the International Student Advisor if you plan on traveling out of the United States. You must have a recent signature on the back page of your I-20 to re-enter the US. The International Student Advisor can also provide you with letters, transcripts, and anything else that you might need for your travel abroad. Don’t be afraid to ask!

Address/Contact Information Changes

It is crucial that you keep Regis University informed of any changes to your address as soon as possible. The USCIS requires that information be reported to them within 10 days. Additionally, changes to your phone number and email address are also important for the International Student Advisor. Without accurate information, it is possible to not get information that the F-1 student needs in order to be successful in this country. Please keep your contact information current with Regis University.

CPT

Curricular Practical Training- This is an employment option open to any F-1 student after attending Regis for one year. The work must be in the student’s field of study. The student must get authorization from his or her advisor and new employer. These authorizations must be presented to an international advisor to get the appropriate authorization and endorsement. Without this, the employment is not legal. Contact the International Student Advisor for more details.

Updates

New evidence required to obtain a Social Security Number (10/13/2004)

Effective on October 13, 2004, international students needing to obtain a social security card will be required to show proof of employment before a card will be issued. Students will need to provide a letter from the designated school official verifying the student's approval for work. In addition, the student must present a letter from the employer detailing that employment has been secured. Please contact our office if you require a social security number. We will do our best to assist you.

US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Requirements (10/7/03)

New SEVIS Fee requirements(10/27/08)

On October 27, 2008, the Department of Homeland Security increased the SEVIS fee for any student seeking an F-1 or J-1 visa after that date. The fee is $200 for an F-1 visa and $180 for a J-1 visa. No visa will be issued until the student has paid the fee and has shown the embassy official a receipt. Students who are changing status to F-1 or J-1 or are applying for reinstatement will be subject to the SEVIS fee as well. See http://www.fmjfee.com for more details.
