Veterans Benefits At Regis University

NOTICE: Are you waiting for your VA Education Benefits? The Department of Veterans Affairs has made funds available for Veteran students who are still awaiting their education benefit claim to be processed. Eligible veterans can receive up to a $3000 advance, which will be recouped from future benefit payments. If you are a student who applied for one of VA’s education programs and have not yet received your monthly benefit payment for the Fall 2009 term, you can request a one-time advance payment at your local VA regional Office or through VA’s website, www.va.gov.

Benefits Form

After applying to a Regis University program, you may apply to receive VA benefits. You can obtain an application from Enrollment Services (Main Hall, fourth floor, Lowell Campus) or you can fill one out online by going directly to the VA Benefits Application site at www.gibill.va.gov.

Please note: If you fill out the application online, you need to print a copy of it and fax (303-964-5536) or mail it to the VA Certifying official at Regis. Without this copy, Regis cannot process your enrollment with the VA. With the completed application, you must provide:

  • A Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE) if you are in the National Guard or Reserves.
  • A "certified-true" copy of your DD-214 if you are applying for benefits for the first time since retiring from active duty. The “certified-true” stamp can be provided by a Base Education Officer or a County Clerk in the Recorder’s Office. The DVA will not accept a notarized DD-214.
  • The signature of your Armed Forces Education Service Officer if you are currently on active duty.
  • A photocopy of your marriage license and children’s birth certificates if you are a Chapter 34/30 conversion.

Post 9/11 GI Bill Military members who served active duty for at least 90 days after September 10, 2001 may be eligible for the new Post 9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33 benefit). With this benefit, tuition and fees are paid directly to the school up to a maximum of $497 per credit hour in the state of Colorado. Eligible students may also receive a monthly housing allowance and book stipend both of which are paid to the student. For more information and to apply, go to www.gibill.va.gov.

Important! Post 9/11 recipients must submit their Certificate of Eligibility to the VA Certifying Official at Regis. If a Certificate of Eligibility has not been received from the VA, then a copy of the VA application form is sufficient until the Certificate is received.

Yellow Ribbon
Regis University is a Yellow Ribbon Participant! Students who are eligible for 100% of the Post 9/11 GI Bill and attending a Master's program in either the School of Management or School of Computer Sciences are automatically enrolled for Yellow Ribbon benefits.

Note: Yellow Ribbon only applies to those students attending a Colorado campus or online courses. Las Vegas classroom-based students do not qualify for the Yellow Ribbon program.

Registration/VA Certification

Using your academic program’s established procedures, register for courses in a timely manner. Regis VA Certifying Officials will automatically identify your enrollment information and report it to the DVA. If you must change your enrollment after the add/drop period for the term, notify the Regis certifying official as soon as possible. Otherwise, this may cause problems with your benefits payment.

Excessive changes to your schedule can greatly affect your VA payment. You should limit your course changes to avoid misinterpretation by the VA.

Pay Rates

Pay rates are based on each academic period (term) registration, not on the full semester. Therefore, monthly amounts may fluctuate with the number of credit hours you are taking. The VA Certifying officials at Regis University are not experts in VA payment information. To find out your monthly payment, contact the VA directly.

Training Time Equivalency Table

As a Veteran, you are paid for the time you are taking courses. If you are not in a course, no payment will be processed by the VA. Since Regis does not always offer traditional terms within each semester, it is important to understand how the VA evaluates your training time. For a copy of the Training Time Equivalency Table in PDF format, click here.

Maintaining Full-Time Status at Regis

For UNDERGRADUATES at Regis University, the following scales for VA pay apply:

  • One 8 week course = 1/2 time.
  • One 5 week course = 3/4 time.

Below are examples of full-time status scenerios:

Scenario #1: Full time throughout the semester. (15 credit hours)

----------8week1----------- : -----------8week2-----------

-----5week1----- : -----5week2----- : -----5week3-----

Scenario #2: Full time throughout the semester. (18 credit hours)

-----5week1----- : -----5week2----- : -----5week3-----

-----5week1----- : -----5week2----- : -----5week3-----

Scenario #3: Full time throughout the semester. (12 credit hours)
-------8week1------- : -------8week2-------
-------8week1------- : -------8week2-------

Students receiving the Post 9/11 GI Bill must be in at least one classroom-based course and be enrolled above half-time each term to receive the housing allowance.

NOTE: Any gap in enrollment during the semester will NOT be paid by the VA.

As a GRADUATE student, each 8-week course is considered full time. Every semester-long course (16 weeks) is considered half time. Any break in enrollment will NOT be paid by the VA.

Retroactive Payments

In most cases, GI Bill payments are made retroactively. The VA processes benefit awards in arrears of one month. For example, your attendance in November will be paid for in December. Due to the number of students in distance programs, Regis University is unable to participate in the accelerated payment options through the VA.

Benefit Assistance

If you experience a benefit payment interruption or change that you cannot account for, contact the DVA directly at 1-888-442-4551 or contact them through the VA website at www.gibill.va.gov.

VA Education benefits do not apply to:

  • National Standardized Exams (CLEP, DANTES, PONSI, etc.)
  • Credit-by-Exam
  • Life Experience Credit
  • Continuing/Corporate Education
  • Non-Degree/Post-Completion/Certificate Seeking Programs
