Once again Regis University DPT students demonstrate their leadership! The American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists - Student Special Interest Group has announced the election of officers.
President - Rebecca Hardy, Regis University
Secretary - Angela Mueller , Regis University
Not only has the Regis curriculum challenged me to grow as a student, it has also challenged me to grow as a professional, mentor, friend, and person. The program teaches you not only to succeed in entry level physical therapy skills, but they also give you the tools to remain a cutting edge professional. In short, Regis educates learners how to learn. This is just one way in which Regis promotes students to become life long learners. The Regis curriculum holds true to the Jesuit mission by guiding students to becoming leaders in service of others, by offering a variety of fun and rewarding service learning projects from helping skiers, who are disabled to educating middle school students on the benefits of health awareness.
The Regis curriculum allows for individuality, in that each student is given opportunities to expand on leadership abilities in his or her areas of choice, which further encourages the Jesuit mission of knowledge of self. The outstanding faculty and students help to cultivate critical thinking skills. Most importantly, the Regis DPT program has introduced me to professionals and colleagues in which I have formed, what will become, life-long friendships and professional relationships.
The Regis faculty is like a Monet painting with the faculty representing very different colored dots that harmonize into one cohesive picture of excellence that represents Regis University. I have had the privilege to study under and collaborate with some of the leading therapists and researchers in their respective areas of specialization. Despite being researchers, clinicians, professors and having families, professors make time to provide extra one-on-one help to students and develop relationships that extend beyond the classroom, as colleagues and friends in the physical therapy profession. The curriculum is based on cutting-edge evidence and students are challenged to ask question to develop critical thinking skills that will be part of the foundation for clinical decision making throughout our careers. Regis has taught me foundational skills and values that will allow me to continue to grow and develop throughout my career.
Why Regis? I asked myself this question many times while applying to physical therapy programs. At the time, I choose Regis because I was impressed by the process in which Regis interviews its prospective students. I appreciated the fact that Regis cared about the person I am, and not just scores put down on paper. As I have gone through my student career, the importance of character and interpersonal relationships has made my time at Regis very rewarding. Regis brought together a group of individuals that is smart, fun, and motivated. This created a group experience where we could work together, learn from one another’s strengths, and create friendships that will last a lifetime.
Becoming a student at Regis University was one of the best decisions I ever made. When I was in the process of selecting a PT program, I was looking for a program that would mold me into the PT I knew I was capable of becoming. I was looking for a program to challenge me and encourage me to develop into a well-rounded practitioner. It did not take me long to realize Regis University was distinct from other schools I had visited. When I came to interview with Regis University, the professors made me feel right at home by genuinely engaging in conversation, creating a student-centered learning environment that respects individual needs, and promoting leaders in the profession.
The faculty at Regis University is willing to listen to our needs and concerns and is focused on guiding us into becoming well-rounded individuals and practitioners. The DPT program at Regis University is well respected in the physical therapy community at the state and national levels. The faculty at Regis University is well-recognized for various achievements in research, legislative issues, leadership roles, and community involvement. Along with their accomplishments, I have found that our faculty is unique in that it is down to earth and holds an open door policy with students. Our professors are student focused, treat students as equals, and are responsive to student needs. The faculty members at Regis University are mentors, role models, and practitioners themselves.
Regis University’s DPT program has enabled me to become a well-rounded individual and practitioner by challenging me to develop as a leader, a communicator, and an evidence-based practitioner. The professors at Regis challenge students to think critically and problem solve effectively. Through my experience at Regis University I have also learned to better serve my community through service learning opportunities with senior citizens at the Argyle, a tennis program for disadvantaged children at the Boys and Girls Club, and disabled individuals at a Winter Park ski program.
While physical therapy school can be extremely demanding of a student’s time, Colorado has much to offer when you need to take a break from school. One perk of Denver is that it is within an hour of the Rocky Mountains and some of the best skiing in the country. I have also enjoyed the various hiking and biking trails in the Denver and Boulder area.
As a third year DPT student, I feel Regis University has adequately prepared me as I embark on my journey as a future physical therapist by encouraging me to become an agent of change, a leader, and further ignite my passion for the physical therapy field. In looking for a school, I strongly encourage you to consider what Regis University has to offer you as a future physical therapy student.
If I were to describe an environment created and dedicated to learning and empowering individuals to become their true self, I would describe the opportunities and life at Regis University. During my time here I have developed skills and qualities that I never knew I had or could attain. I feel this is partially due to the students who come to this school. They’re focused, and eager to engage themselves in their scholastic endeavors, as well as participate in social activities. From taking part in intramurals, outdoor activities, and after school study groups, to Halloween parties and Christmas gift giving, the social life here has never been dull. Regis students are also dedicated to their profession, demonstrated by participation in national APTA conferences and excellent passing percentages on the PT licensure exam.
Not only have I developed lifelong colleagues with my classmates, but the faculty consistently engage themselves in our well-being to allow for an open and accepting relationship that grows with time. They help to accommodate an individualized learning process by asking for our feedback regarding the curriculum. From attending student social functions, to offering their time to help, the faculty is devoted to our growth and development as true professionals. By utilizing their professional background, they exude knowledge and demonstrate leadership in the health care community. I am fortunate to have had this opportunity to learn from the faculty at Regis.
The Regis mission and values have opened my eyes to the service of giving and reaching out to the community. These opportunities have contributed and guided me to become a stronger person and molded me into a professional that is dedicated to my profession and a life long learner. If I had to look for a school that offers an individually directed learning environment like this, I would put Regis on the top of my list.
