The Summer 2019 immersion at Father Woody’s Haven of Hope includes working with individuals experiencing homelessness/near-homelessness in Denver. The “service learning” aspect of the immersion includes experiencing a “night of homelessness” by having an overnight “minimally sheltered” experience here on campus. Students are expected to sleep outside for one night on campus. •The “overnight” is planned and implemented by RHCHP Service Learning and the Global Health Pathway Committee. The date for this overnight is Monday, June 10th at 5 pm until Tuesday, June 11th at 7:30 am. •The students and staff/faculty will be inside a classroom for a Preflection and Postflection session. The Preflection is from 5-9 pm on June 10th in Peter Claver Hall 306 (there is also a lab activity in PCH 409 from ~6:30-9:00 pm). The Postflection session is from 6:30-7:30 am on June 11th in Peter Claver Hall 306. •Students will park in Lot 7 for overnight parking (paying at kiosk if they don’t currently pay monthly for parking). Faculty/staff park in Upper Lot 4 with note on dashboard stating event (for emergencies). •Students will be provided with a sack dinner and sack breakfast provided by RHCHP Service Learning. The students pick up their sack meals in the lobby of the Chapel at 5:15 pm chaperoned by staff/faculty. •Students will sleep in the “Grotto” on campus (open grass area to the west of O’Connell Hall/north of Carroll Hall – upper southwest portion of grass to the south of the “Mary” statue). An alternative site has been identified in case of inclement weather conditions (Dome starting at 10 pm or the PT Lab 409). The overnight is required regardless of weather conditions. •Acceptable “structures” and supplies (provided by students) include: tent, tarp, cardboard boxes, and a sleeping bag and/or blanket. Students/faculty are advised not to use tent/tarp stakes. Open fires are not permitted. Structure/supply setup will take place following the Preflection at ~9:00 pm. •Bathrooms are available during the night in Carroll Hall just south of the Grotto. Students enter Carroll Hall using the west side entrance. •A Service Learning staff member and/or GHP faculty will spend the night with the students and are available during the night for questions and/or emergencies. Campus Safety provides staff/faculty with a radio for emergencies. •Student cell phones are not permitted during the experience. In case of an emergency, the students contact the staff/faculty and staff/faculty contact Campus Safety by calling: 303-458-4122. •Campus Safety officers provide a “homeless camping ban scenario” during the evening while students are sleeping in the Grotto area (approximately 10:30 pm). A script is provided to officers prior to the event. •Following Postflection, students may shower on campus before class/work on Tuesday morning in the Regis Fitness Center (Coors Life Building on the north end of campus). They need to bring their student ID and check in with the Fitness Center staff when they arrive and they will provide students with access and a towel if they need one. Location: Grotto South
