Academic Advising

Academic advising is an integral part of the educational process in Regis College. It is the intent of this program to provide the student with a faculty advisor who assists the advisee to gain the maximum from their educational experience.

The Academic Advising Program is administered through the Office of the Associate Dean for Regis College. This office serves as a general source of information about campus resources and specialized programs.

First-Year Advising

Students new to Regis College are advised by their RCC 200 (Writing Analytically) professor for their first year. Because their advisor will also be their faculty member, they are guaranteed regular contact with their advisor, both inside and outside of class.

Second-Year Advising

Many students declare an academic major during their first year. As such, their academic advisor will switch to someone in that department. Students who remain undeclared may be assigned to a new academic advisor for the second year. Students who choose to double major will have a faculty advisor from each area.

Honors Program

Students who are in the Honors Program are advised by the program directors throughout their career at Regis. First-year faculty advisors are given explicit faculty development and support so that they can advise students both in academic matters and extra-curricular concerns.

Pre-Health Sciences

Students who enter Regis as pre-nursing, pre-pharmacy, or pre-health and exercise science, while still having a Regis College professor as an advisor, will also have a pre-health professional advisor. Pre-health advisors are specially trained to work with this group of students to ensure that they are making sufficient academic progress and meeting pre-requisites for admission into those majors.

Advising FAQ

You can find the name and contact information of your academic advisor by logging in to the RangerPortal and choosing the Student Planning menu. From this menu, choose Plan Your Degree and Class Schedule. Then select Advising from the top menu bar (above the schedule).

You can declare or change your major/minor at any time during your college career. However, some students find that declaring a major during their first year helps them find a community with other students and faculty in that major. Other students find that waiting until their second year gives them time to discover which major best fits their learning needs and goals. Even students who are close to graduation can change their major/minor to more accurately reflect the classes they have completed.

To declare* or change your major/minor, log into the RangerPortal and complete the Change of Academic Intent/Major Declaration form. You can find this form in the menu on the left side of the RangerPortal, under the Office of the Registrar menu.

*To "declare" means to choose your major/minor for the first time.

It is highly recommended that you meet with your advisor before registering. Your academic advisor is your partner in planning your path through college. Speaking to an advisor before registering for classes will ensure that you are taking the classes you need for your specific degree plan. Advisors can help you determine the appropriate course load, timing and order of the classes to take, so you can complete your degree and graduate in the time that you desire.

In some cases, you may have “holds” or “flags” on your account that will prevent you from registering. Some reasons this might happen could include:

  • You are required to meet with your advisor;
  • We need updated information from you;
  • You have a tuition payment due;
  • You have unpaid fees;
  • And more.

To determine which flags or holds are on your account, log into RangerPortal and look for any messages on the top of the home page.
