Four Ranger Teams Earn Brechler Award for Top GPAs

June 23, 2014

Four Regis University teams earned the prestigious Paul W. Brechler award for highest team grade point average, the league office announced Monday. The Rangers had the second most teams honored, trailing Colorado Mines who had five. Colorado Mesa tied the Rangers with four.

First year coach Chris Terry saw his team sport a 3.37 grade point average to top the eight baseball institutions. Men's Cross Country earned the award with a 3.35 GPA, while Men's Soccer topped the RMAC with a 3.39 GPA. Paula Bauer's women's golf squad had the second highest GPA of any of the 22 team winners with a 3.64 average to take top honors amongst the 10 women's golf teams.

The RMAC recognizes the 22 teams with the top grade point averages in each of the conference's sports with the second annual "Brechler Awards". The award is named after Paul W. Brechler, the first Commissioner of the RMAC (1976-1990), who along with his wife Wanda, were the first inductees into the RMAC Hall of Fame. Brechler is also the former athletic director at the University of Iowa and was Commissioner of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC).

Grades were used from the 2013-2014 academic year. All student-athletes that were on the institution's NCAA eligibility list were included in the team GPA calculation. The formula used to calculate the team GPA was total quality points for each semester divided by the total number of credits for each semester.

Plaques for each team will be presented at the 2014 RMAC Hall of Fame and Awards banquet on Friday, July 11, at the Colorado Springs Marriott Hotel.
