I am a full professor, co-founder/co-director of the Mile-High MFA in Creative Writing, a novelist, a Fulbright scholar, and an early Americanist whose dissertation focuses on the works of Nathaniel Hawthorne as responses to Ralph Waldo Emerson. I am also a great admirer of Herman Melville's sprawling and ambitious novels, Edgar Allan Poe's crazy stories, and Emily Dickinson's exquisite poetry. My other interests include fiction writing, Irish literature, African-American literature, and American modernist poetry. My novel, White Plains (Conundrum Press/Bower House Books) was a Colorado Book Awards finalist, named #1 of Westword Magazine's "Ten Best Books by Colorado Authors," and the Arapahoe Libraries "Village Read 2018." My short stories have appeared in Glimmer Train, Colorado Review, Saranac Review, South Dakota Review and many other journals.
