Heidi Barker joined the Regis University faculty in 2004. She earned her B.A. from Trinity University, her M.Ed. in Educational Administration from the University of North Texas and her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She taught in a variety of public-school settings before entering the professorship. These were in large urban districts, as well as a small rural district, and a suburban district. This variety of settings included teaching special education and general education.
At Regis, Dr. Barker taught courses in the special education program (focusing on assessment, interventions and collaboration), methods courses for elementary licensure (focusing on science, social studies and math) and a seminar course in the Integrative Core: Educational Disparity and Justice. Her research and writing centers on topics of teaching strategies and on collaboration in the interest of preparing and supporting quality educators in the context of school reform. More broadly, her interests focus on how school reform efforts are impacting public education in a democratic society.
Dr. Barker is the author of several articles, book chapters, and two books, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Exceptional Students: Strategies for Teaching and Assessment (2010) and Teachers and the Reform of Elementary Science: Stories of Conversation and Personal Process (2004).
