Karen Smith, BSPharm, MS, PhD, RPh, was a Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at Regis University School of Pharmacy. She received her Pharmacy degree from the University of Montana School of Pharmacy, MS from the University of Washington Pharmaceutical Outcomes Research and Policy program, and a Ph.D. from the University of Arizona in pharmaceutical economics, policy and outcomes. She maintains her clinical practice in the Emergency Department at a community hospital.
Dr. Smith’s research experience is in conducting large database analyses, pharmacoepidemiologic studies, and health outcomes research. Areas of study have included asthma, diabetes, lipid disorders, opioid reduction, medication therapy management, 30-day readmissions and core measures, mining social media for adverse drug reactions, and contraindicated drug pairs. Her teaching expertise is centered in biostatistics, statistical theory, and research methods. She regularly consults and teaches pharmacy residents and is a mentor in their research projects. She has multiple publications in peer-reviewed journals and has presented at national conferences in outcomes research.
