David Hicks grew up in New York and earned his Ph.D. in American Literature at New York University. He has been an academic for many years, but in his forties he decided to stop writing about writers and start being a writer himself.

David has since published short stories in Glimmer Train, Colorado Review, Specs, and Whitefish Review, among many other magazines. He is a Colorado Council on the Arts Fiction Award winner, a Pushcart nominee, and a Fulbright scholar (at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic). His debut novel, White Plains (Conundrum Press / Bower House Books) was a 2018 Colorado Book Awards finalist, the Arapahoe Libraries' 2018 Village Read, and #1 of Westword Magazine's Top Ten Books by Colorado Writers. His novel manuscript, The Ruins, has been a finalist in the New Rivers, New American Press, and Engine Books novel contests. 

David teaches English for the Regis University English Department and teaches fiction writing in the BA/MFA combined-degree program. He has been Faculty Lecturer of the Year and Faculty Scholar of the Year, and was thrice honored as Faculty Member of the Year. He lives with his wife Cynthia in the Denver area and plays saxophone for the Plagiarists, a rock-and-roll cover band.
