Jennifer T. Cates

Dr. Cates has worked as a Regis faculty member since 2010 and has been supervising mental health practitioners within university counseling and family therapy centers since 2006. She is an American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) Approved Supervisor and provides developmental and contextual supervision for therapists in training as they work with individuals, couples, and families. She has specialized training in evidenced supported treatments, such as the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples and families.

Prior to coming to Regis University in 2010, Dr. Cates was an assistant professor at Central Washington University in the department of psychology, where she taught master’s level classes in the counseling program for four years. Her teaching interests include Cultural Issues and Social Justice in Counseling and Therapy, Couples Therapy, and Clinical Courses. Dr. Cates has worked as a licensed therapist since 2005, serving couples, families, and individuals from a systemic and contextual framework, and she provides supervision to therapists seeking licensure. Dr. Cates has an integrated approach to therapy and supervision, but is most drawn to Experiential Family Therapy, Intergenerational Theory, Structural Family Therapy, and Solution-Focused Therapy. She has completed training in evidenced based models for couple therapy, including Gottman Level 1 and the Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy Externship.
