Meghan Sobel Cohen

Meghan Sobel Cohen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication and the Master of Sustainable Development Practice. Dr. Cohen’s research focuses on decolonizing global media theories and research methods, the role of media systems in non-democratic contexts and the role of media in combatting human rights abuses and humanitarian crises. She has given a TEDx talk that has been viewed more than 1.5 million times, and she has published in journals such as International Journal of Press/Politics, International Journal of Communication, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, African Journalism Studies and International Communication Gazette. Her most recent book, Press Freedom and the (Crooked) Path Toward Democracy: Lessons from Journalists in East Africa, was published in 2023 with Oxford University Press. She has a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an M.A. from the University of Denver and a B.A. from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
