Cyber smoke jumpers practice their response to attacks on Colorado soil

Denver, CO. -- They’re being called “cyber smoke jumpers” and they will work rapidly to extinguish the fires of a cyber-attack in Colorado.

Regis University, in partnership with the Colorado Army and Air Force National Guard and the State of Colorado, aims to extinguish cyber security disasters not only in Colorado, but around the nation. Through a 15-month grant project, Regis University officials have been working with the Colorado Army and National Guard and state officials to create an extensive, reliable and reproducible model for the nation on how all levels of government can work together to protect the nation’s critical infrastructure.

The guard’s response to a cyber-attack is similar in scope to its response to a natural disaster. Instead of battling actual fires, they plan to use about 2,000 citizens who will use their IT skills and work experience to extinguish the cyber fires.

The project addresses the need for rapid, comprehensive training of the guard membership in computer and network security to increase Colorado’s capacity for detection, containment, response, and mitigation of a cyber-attack.

The effort has resulted in a Rapid Response Model on how to best respond to attacks against Colorado's critical infrastructure and improves the readiness of the National Guard to better protect citizens and critical government infrastructure.

Regis University is uniquely qualified to lead the study because of its extensive experience in adult education and virtualization of learning environments, virtual labs, hands-on experiential learning through its College of Computer Information and Sciences.

The project was funded through a Department of Defense Information Assurance Scholarship Program.
