What can you do with a degree in accounting? Read up on a field that’s helping the business world operate more effectively.

If you think accountants only file taxes and crunch numbers, think again. While analytical and financial skills are certainly required, today’s accountants play an important role helping organizations run effectively and profitably.

Better yet, the job outlook for accountants is positive. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that employment in the field is expected to grow by 10 percent through 2026.

If you studied accounting in school, or if you’re considering continuing your education to take your career further, here are some paths in the field:

Certified Public Accountant (CPA)

Besides assisting the public with tax preparation, CPAs get involved with corporate tax, financial reporting and auditing for businesses. The largest employers in public accounting are the “Big Four,” the four largest accounting firms in the world that audit more than 80 percent of all U.S. public companies

CPAs can also work in the private sector, in managerial roles that don’t support the public, holding lead finance positions like Chief Financial Officer or Controller.

How do you become a CPA? There’s a list of requirements  for certification, including 150 hours of college credit. Regis University offers a Master of Science in Accounting degree that prepares students to become CPAs with challenging coursework, real-world business experience and credit requirements.

Accountants also serve as consultants, providing strategic advice and helping businesses improve operations. Consultants are skilled in areas like employee training, technology, or improving processes. Just as importantly, they’re relied on to understand and follow ethical business practices. It’s why the business programs at Regis focus on ethics and corporate responsibility just as much as profits. Transforming businesses and helping employees work more effectively are big tasks that call for passionate and responsible leaders with a desire to serve.

The Accounting Department

The accounting department within any organization plays a vital role controlling the flow of money. Payroll to employees, collecting and recording cash from sales, payments to vendors, and tracking inventory and property are all typical functions of an accounting team.

From a family-owned shop to a global enterprise, accounting is essential to running a business. At Regis, we help future accountants develop their business acumen with bachelor's and master's courses in management, finance, marketing and more. Accounting leaders will achieve more than just profits, keeping an eye on morality and supporting the community around them.
