This photograph, the USS Mahan, was the ship Don was on from 1966-1967. He was one of the few men who could type, so he was assigned to the communications center, located above the main deck. The problem was that above deck the structures were made of aluminum, which was not at all impervious to enemy fire -- a bullet would go through one wall and out the other. Consequently Don’s safeguard was the heavy steel U-shaped desk that housed his communications equipment. When needed, Don would have to duck under the desk for cover.
