FAQ and What to Expect

The Office of Counseling and Personal Development (OCPD) offers students a safe and accepting environment for developing the awareness and strategies needed to handle crisis situations, address persistent problems and grow in self-knowledge and understanding. We know that reaching out for help isn't easy, so we hope to provide answers to some questions you may have and make the process as easy as possible. Our office does not discriminate on the basis of race, gender or sexual orientation and is open to students of all faiths, backgrounds and demographics.

 

When you first call the counseling center at 303.458.3507 or come by our office (LDC Room 114), one of our administrative assistants will ask you a few questions such as: class/program status, if you have been a previous OCPD client, mandated vs. voluntary participation in counseling, clinician preferences, etc. In addition, you will be answering questions based upon our "What Type of Appointment Do I Need?" form which assists us in determining what timeframe you need an appointment. Based upon your appointment type, your schedule and clinician requests, the first step will be to schedule you for an intake appointment.

Upon checking in for your Intake appointment, you will be asked to complete our intake paperwork and our intake therapist will clarify and assess your reasons for seeking help and obtain some relevant background information. During the intake session, you and your counselor will decide the best course of action to address your concerns which may include individual counseling, group therapy, drop-in workshops, couples counseling, a referral to other services on campus or to a professional outside of the Regis community. If services will be provided through OCPD, you and your intake therapist will discuss which OCPD therapist will be the best "fit" for you given schedules, presenting problem and any other case-specific requests. Your intake therapist will then schedule your next session.

Crisis Support

Regardless of where you fall on the "What Type of Appointment Do I Need Form?", if you believe that you need to be seen immediately, please notify our administrative assistants of this. They will inform the OCPD Director and you will be seen in a timely manner. If it is outside of our regular business hours or on the weekend and you are having a mental health crisis, you may call our main number at 303.458.3507 and speak to a licensed mental health professional 24/7.

Confidentiality

All information discussed within counseling sessions is kept confidential. The only exceptions to this are if you are in imminent danger of hurting yourself or others, make a threat regarding a specific location on campus and/or disclose any type of abuse or neglect regarding a minor child or elder adult. In these instances we are mandated by law to report this to the appropriate agencies or intervene as necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

OCPD's senior staff is comprised of highly qualified, well-experienced licensed clinicians with both Master and Doctoral level degrees within the social work, clinical psychology and counseling fields. We are also a training site for an American Psychological Association-approved doctoral psychology intern and two graduate interns. These interns are supervised by senior staff members so that clients can be assured of a high level of competency and treatment provision. More detailed biographies can be found on our website.

Just as in private practice agencies, all information discussed within counseling sessions is kept confidential. No other person or department on campus can even know that you are attending counseling without your specific, written consent. Even if your RA or a professor walks you over to our offices, they cannot know if you ever attended any additional sessions or what you discussed in session with us. The only exceptions to this law are if you are in imminent danger of hurting yourself or others, make a threat regarding a specific location on campus and/or disclose any type of abuse or neglect regarding a minor child or elder adult then we are mandated by law to report this to the appropriate agencies or intervene as necessary.

Your therapist will discuss this with you in the intake session. Given that Regis is a small campus there will likely be times that you would run into your therapist in the cafeteria, student center or just walking around campus. Your therapist will inform you that they will not acknowledge you in public unless you do so first in order to assure confidentiality. Even then, it is in your control to define to anyone else how you know us (for example rather than saying someone is your therapist you could say that you met us through a classroom presentation or consulted us on a research project for class).

The “fit” between and therapist and a client is one of the most important components of a successful and productive counseling experience. Therefore, if you don’t feel as though you are “clicking” with your therapist, please speak up! Believe us, we won’t be offended and will help to re-assign you to a new therapist within the OCPD or assist you with an off campus referral (at your own expense) in order to meet your needs.

On rare occasions, OCPD staff have found it necessary to request that students be assessed at a hospital in situations where we are concerned about your personal safety—not because you are “crazy.” If this were to occur, all efforts are made to initiate this process in a calm and collaborative manner in order to assure privacy and confidentiality.
