Statement on resignation of Regis University president

The Board of Trustees of Regis University today accepted the resignation of Rev. John P. Fitzgibbons, S.J., as the President of Regis University effective December 31, 2021. Expressing the sentiment of the Trustees, Robert B. Engel, Chair of the Board said, “We are extremely grateful for the many contributions of Fr. Fitzgibbons during his 10-year tenure as Regis’ 24th President. He has tirelessly demonstrated his passion for our mission, his respect for our faculty and staff, and his care and concern for our students. Regis University is in a strong position to continue to build leaders in service to others thanks to Fr. Fitzgibbons’ leadership – and we look forward to honoring him at the Spring 2022 commencement ceremonies.”

The Board of Trustees is actively engaged in selecting an Interim President to serve the University beginning on January 1, 2022. The Board is considering both internal and external candidates with the goal of providing strong interim leadership while the selection process for the next President of the University proceeds. It is expected that the new permanent President will be named by the beginning of the fall 2022 academic semester. Engel emphasized, “That selection process will include the participation of faculty, staff, students and other stakeholders as we seek to identify the best President to build on Fr. Fitzgibbons’ legacy and take us to the next level in the quickly evolving landscape of higher education.”

Mr. Engel went on to say, "We are blessed with high quality, committed leaders, faculty and staff that will continue in their roles to support the Interim President and ensure the educational, social and spiritual experience of our students is in keeping with our mission and high standards. We are proud to serve a very diverse student population and look forward to welcoming in the Class of 2026 next August with our new President.”
