Dr. Gardner's primary interests include prisoner education and political economic analysis. He has taught in, developed and administered college programs for 40 years, including initiating and administrating programs in most of Colorado's state prisons as well as numerous community corrections facilities and residential drug treatment programs. He helped initiate and develop the Adams State Prison College Program in Alamosa, Colorado which, over the past 15 years, has become one of the most extensive and successful prison college programs in the country. Dr. Gardner's writing and research includes works on the history of prison industry in the U.S. and he is presently completing an introduction to the work of Karl Marx.
