Through my career in nursing and teaching I have practiced the Jesuit value of “Cura Personalis” committed to the service of others, the development of intellectual growth, while protecting human dignity. As a nurse, I care for the needs of my patient that they are incapable to perform for themselves. My desire is to assist the patient to return to his or her most optimal state of health and independence or to a peaceful death. As a teacher, I strive to help my students gain the wisdom and knowledge needed to become an independent practitioner. I view this journey metaphorically as the story of the caterpillar turning into a butterfly. The student enters my classroom like a caterpillar ready to be transformed. Unlike the caterpillar, the student is not alone. As the teacher, I come alongside the student helping to shape and mold them along the way, each of us doing our part in the learning process. It is my hope that each student will emerge successful, forever changed from the experiences and knowledge they have gained and ready to move to the next step in their journey. The education and wisdom student’s gain throughout their complete university education permit students to critically think, to examine their own belief systems, to creatively solve problems, and to consider “how ought we to live” (Magis).Learning is a lifelong process, and information, especially in the medical field, changes daily. I actively pursue answers to students’ questions and likewise encourage students to research answers independently. This encourages the student and the teacher to remain partners in the learning process, each contributing equally (Unity of Mind and Heart).
