Three Santeros: Carlos Santistevan, Frank Zamora and Sean Trujillo
Dayton Memorial Library, Regis University
Denver, Colorado
Feb. 3–27
Artist Reception: Thursday, Feb. 19, 4:30 – 6:30 p.m.
Three Santeros brings together the work of Carlos Santistevan, Frank Zamora and Sean Trujillo in an exhibition that examines the continuity and evolution of the santero tradition in the contemporary Southwest. Presented at Dayton Memorial Library at Regis University, the exhibition highlights three artists whose practices are rooted in devotional imagery while engaging personal, cultural and material innovation.
Drawing from the long-standing tradition of santo-making — historically associated with carved and painted religious figures — each artist reinterprets this lineage through distinct approaches. Carlos Santistevan’s work reflects a deep commitment to traditional iconography and unpainted bulto technique, Frank Zamora’s artwork explore materiality and form as a bridge between folk practice and contemporary art and Sean Trujillo offers a generational perspective that expands the visual language of santos through experimentation and hybrid forms.
Together, the artists create a dialogue across generations, revealing santo-making as a living tradition — one that continues to serve devotional, cultural, and expressive purposes. Three Santeros invites viewers to consider how tradition is preserved, challenged and reimagined through individual artistic voices.
The exhibition will be on view at Dayton Memorial Library, Regis University, from Feb. 3 through Feb. 27. An artist reception will be held on Thursday, February 19, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
