What is going on in Belize?

Greetings from Belize! Our relationship with JPEN is relatively new and as is the case with every new relationship, we are very excited about the possibilities. Presently, we (the Jesuits of Belize in collaboration with JPEN) are in the process of undertaking a feasibility study to explore the possibility of establishing a Jesuit degree program in the Belize Central Prison. The purpose of the study is to assess the current situation in the prison as it relates to education programs, as well as to determine how to partner with St. John’s College, the only Jesuit High School/University in Belize.

There is definite excitement and eager anticipation at the idea from the prison administration and governing body. The prison houses approximately 1,300 inmates, the majority of whom have completed at least some secondary education.

The Jesuits of Belize are committed to making a Jesuit education available to the potential students in the Belize Central Prison in keeping with our mission to serve our marginalized brothers and sisters wherever possible. The data behind prison education programs indicates it can reduce recidivism by as much as 50%. Prison education programs also contribute to a community’s economic development by training and equipping future workers (released individuals).
