Honoring a Good Apple

We kicked off May with Teacher Appreciation Week.

And if you’re like us, five days doesn’t seem nearly long enough to recognize our tireless mentors for shaping the minds of students across the nation. Therefore, we’re officially taking up a whole month’s-worth of time to say, “Thank you.”

Amber von der Hofen, Regis alumna, and Assistant Director of a PreK-6 school in the Mapleton School District of Colorado, took the time to answer a few questions about her inspirational journey in the field of education.

Q. What degree did you earn from Regis University? Tell us about your experience.

In 2003, I received my Interdivisional BA. In 2015, I received my Master’s in Educational Leadership (Principal Licensure) from the Regis College of Contemporary Liberal Studies. My Regis undergraduate program was such a positive and memorable experience that I knew I would pursue my Master’s degree from Regis as well. Regis has been such an integral part of my life in so many ways, including the gift of higher learning, lifelong friendships, and meeting my husband in the Regis Fieldhouse in 1999 are just pieces of my Regis experience.

Q. What made you choose Regis?

Many of my family members attended Regis and I always wanted to be a Regis Ranger. I visited many universities but they just didn’t feel like the right fit. I really liked the thought of smaller class sizes and individualized attention from professors. Regis simply felt more invested in me both personally and academically. Additionally, I was offered a softball scholarship and that sealed the deal. The chance to receive a great education and the ability to play the sport I love confirmed that Regis was the perfect fit for me.

Q. How did your experiences at Regis help shape your teaching career?

Regis’ comprehensive teacher prep program offered a variety of teaching placements, all providing different experiences and perspectives on education. I have utilized strategies and philosophies from the Regis program throughout my career and will continue to do so. More than anything else, Regis taught me the importance of servant leadership. Part of the Regis mission of learners becoming leaders is something that I carry with me each and every day, and I hope to instill these values in those that I encounter.

Q. Tell us about your career path.

My career in Mapleton Public Schools began shortly after graduating from Regis. My first teaching position was in a 5th grade classroom but I have had the opportunity to teach various grade levels spanning from kindergarten all the way up to middle school. After 12 years in the classroom, I took aposition as an Instructional Coach/IB Coordinator. This role led me to the path of Educational Leadership and brought me to my current role as an Assistant Director (principal) at a K-12 IB school.

Q. What do you love most about teaching?

Educating others is my passion. I have never doubted my decision to become an educator. I love providing kids with opportunities to discover their own passions and open their eyes to the outside world. When the opportunity presented itself to become an administrator, I was excited to extend my love for teaching and learning to include adults. I truly love the relationships that I am able to develop with students, families AND teachers. I am dedicated to providing others the same opportunities that Regis provided me!
